In India
the Sheet Metal Industry is not defined as a specific industry
it can be considered as a part of various industries mainly:
Metal Producers - primarily steel & aluminium, major user
segments - automobile, engineering etc. and sheet metal machinery.
The birth of the Indian steel industry and commencement of
large scale steel production can be dated back to 1907.Liberalisation
in 1991 ushered an era of reforms - de-licensing, price decontrol,
lowering of import restrictions, lowering of duties and abolition
of freight equalisation - and this resulted in an increased
domestic production. Indian companies moved up the value chain
with better quality products, lower costs of manufacturing,
and increased production of value added products. The Indian
steel industry is no longer immune from global trends.
Aluminium is a versatile metal and also the most widely used
non-ferrous metal. The Indian Aluminium industry is around
US$ 1500 million and has an installed capacity of 714,000
TPA. India is one of the top ten players in the world with
respect to production and consumption of Aluminium. Recycled
aluminium in India is still in nascent stage when compared
to the global industry. With growing demand in the user industries,
the contribution of recycled aluminium to the total consumption
is expected to increase.
Both metal
cutting tools and metal forming tools are used in sheet metal
processing. The major product type used for sheet metal working
are Presses / Press Brakes which constitute 80 % of the production
of metal forming machines and 9 % of the total production
of machine tools.
The automobile sector is one of the largest users of sheet
metal and India is emerging as one of the most happening automobile
markets in the world. Production has picked up in the last
quarter of 2001-02. Automobile manufacturers procure steel
sheets from steel majors and manufacture the body panels.
The growth of the Building & Construction sector has opened
the market for sheet metal industry in India.
